The article on the Lighthill report in the 29 June 73 issue of "Science"
prompts us to be prepared to respond to possible inquiries about our
AI research program and about AI research in general. Your inputs
are essential to help develop a timely and accurate picture of AI
research. Please spend a few minutes to provide answers for the
following questions. I need short, pointed answers quickly -- within 24
hours if possible. I know this is a burden,
and I would prefer summary responses now
which entail less work instead of lengthy responses later at greater
effort. In addition, I would also like your views on the Lighthill
report, but the need is less urgent and you might want to send that
later. Please respond to AI at USC-ISI. Thanks,
Steve
1. Please provide a partition of AI research topics. I'm looking for
about 3 to 8 major subcategoties which you feel correctly represent the
field.
2. What have been the successes of AI research? Do not limit yourself
to your own work or even to ARPA-sponsored work -- I can sort it out.
In general, I can supply my own arguments as to why each item represents
a success, so these answers can be quite short, unless you feel the
case is controversial or obscure.
3. What areas of research not now within AI have sprung from AI?
4. What topics has AI disposed of?
5. What tools has AI research produced? What have they
been or are being used for?
6. What major intellectual advances has AI contributed?
7. What are reasonable 3 and 5 year goals for future AI research,
irrespective of the currently sponsored research?
8. What are reasonable longer term goals?
P.S. The responses are strictly for my use and will be totally filtered.
Sketchy answers, such as you might jot down for yourself, should
be quite sufficient for me.
Steve
